There are many different types of therapies and therapists. This can make finding the right thing a challenge. It also can waste your time, energy, and money if you are trying the wrong thing. Often people contact me after trying therapy elsewhere but not seeing results. They did not know the different types or how to check qualifications So here is a breakdown of the 3 main types for you:

Psychologist (like me). A Clinical/Counselling psychologist is a doctor who has done years of training in the NHS. We learn all about the different types of mental health difficulties. We learn about the brain and its development. different types of psychotherapies and treatment which is all evidence-based.
Psychologists can create therapy plans that are best for that individual. With some of the other types of therapists, clients have to fit the therapist's way of practicing.
Psychologists are registered with and accountable to the Health Care Professionals Council (HCPC). We have to do continuous professional development. Psychologists are the only type of therapists that have to be qualified to practice.
I always recommend seeing a psychologist if there is something in your life you want to change. For example; the way you think or behave, your relationships with yourself or less anxiety.
It is always good to see someone who is an expert in your problem. For example, I specialise in stress and anxiety. So I put all my training and development into that area and it is also what I talk about all day. Another psychologist might know everything about eating disorders or psychosis. So you want to see someone who knows your problem area in and out.
Psychotherapist
Psychotherapists have a wide range of training. Ranging from robust courses that take several years to a weekend courses. You always want to check out their training and that they are qualified.
They often provide psychoanalytic psychotherapy. People find this helpful if they want to learn to connect with their feelings. It is worth asking what sessions are like with them. Often appointments might include some silence and reflection.
Counseling
Counselors have a wide range of training. Ranging from robust courses that take several years to a weekend courses. You always want to check out their training and that they are qualified. Counseling is a place for someone to talk about themselves and for someone to listen. Sometimes, talking about your thoughts and feelings in this way can be very helpful. This is often a good option for someone experiencing a difficulty like a bereavement.
